NEWTOWN: ANTHONY LISTER & GEOFFREYTHING STUDIO

The renewal of Newtown Central by Geoffreything.Studio for client Fort Street Capital has allowed a number of creative partnerships to flourish. The transformation of Newtown Central retail embraces this unique neighbourhood including its neighbour the old Newtown Town Hall Hotel. Stripping back and capturing the free spirit of Newtown, the concept involves the adaptive re-use of materials and harnesses local creativity adapting to the culture of Newtown.

As one of Australia ’s renowned contemporary artists, Anthony Lister is most interested in breaking down the ideals of highbrow and lowbrow, calling grafitti art “the final frontier in true artistic integrity”. High and low culture clash in his paintings, drawings, and installations where boorish superheroes, flirtaceous ballerinas, bad-tempered old masters, and imperious vamps raucously co-exist .

Lister has been selected by Fort Street Capital and is working with Geoffreything.Studio to create large bespoke wall art for the Newman Street façade of Newtown Central. Lister is breathing into one of his favourite characters from his early career and exploring the folly in these colourful subjects.
